Whitelist: can you exempt a site from the rules?įrom there I set on overall rating on each blocker. In this round of testing I did find that the blockers are missing more content than in the past.

There are still sites which break, but they seem to be fewer and fewer. The latter seems to be a larger issue these days. The second is if it is actually doing a good job of blocking what you don’t want to see. The first is whether the blocker is overly breaking things on sites, rendering them useless. Customization: can you tweak how the content blocker works to your liking? Many of these are set and forget, which can cause all sorts of annoyances, and others require custom everything.I also chose some sites with overly stupid designs like The Outline for good measure. In general, I found most content blockers are 20% faster than nothing, and the good ones are 40% faster. I timed manually instead of scientifically (as in the past) to get a better sense of the feel for the speed as I found that what shows up in inspectors when running tests doesn’t reflect how fast the site seems to load. Speed: I tested the speed on 13 sites.Setup: how confusing would this be for someone new to content blockers to setup. To that end I redid my testing parameters to evaluate the following: This was problematic because a content blocker could work out to be very fast, while still breaking the usability of the site. In the past I mostly evaluated on speed or website size reductions. Now, I am using a particular word choice here: best. To be fair: it’s really hard to find these content blockers on the App Store now, so I grabbed the ones which looked the most popular to me (top lists, and top search results) and then did the testing to see which was the best. I ran another round of content blocker testing for Mobile Safari in order to take a look at which ones are the ‘best’ right now.
